Make Your Own Clock...

Pip Lincolne's fabulous book, 'Meet me at Mike's' is full of fantastic crafty projects at various levels of difficulty. I'm sure you are all aware that Pip also has a wonderful blog which you can check out here.  One of my favourite craft projects in the book is the Fabric Clock.
I have made several of them now, and given them as gifts. People love them as you can choose a fabric, or paper, that suits individual style and colour selections.
I made this one recently for my friend Tara. She has some orange cushions on her couch and other splashes of orange in her living room, so I thought this fabric would be just right. And she loved it!

Healthy Oat and Fruit Muffins

This muffin recipe is really easy and quick, and you can alter it to your taste. It is great to have for a healthy snack in your lunch or with a nice cup of tea.

Ingredients:
3 cups of rolled oats
4 eggs
1 cup of apple sauce
2 teaspoons of vanilla essence
2 teaspoons of baking powder
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
1/2 -1 cup of fruit of your choice
sugar (optional)

Method:
Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees. In a bowl, mix together the eggs, vanilla essence and apple sauce. In a big bowl, mix this in with the oats, cinnamon and baking powder.
If you want to add sugar to sweeten your mixture, put it in now. I put about 1/2 a cup of brown sugar into this recipe. I prefer to go the sweet option, but if you want a really healthy option, then try it without.

Choose up to two different types of fruit to add to the mixture. For this batch, I cut up about 3/4 of a cup of dates. I have also tried apple and sultanas together which was delicious.

Stir in the fruit with the mixture. It should be quite a moist mixture. Grease a muffin tray and spoon the mixture evenly into the tray. It should make 12.

Bake the muffins in the oven for about 20 minutes, or until the tops turn golden brown. Allow them to cool a little before taking them out of the tray, but make sure you eat one when they're still warm - just to check they taste ok, of course!
Enjoy!!!

Get the Antique Look with some Painting and Sanding!

We are always inspired by the amazing talents of all of the artists who contribute to Robin Street Market, and sometimes like to dabble in craft projects ourselves. My lovely sister-in-law Sarah spent some time on this project below just recently.  Thanks for sharing Sarah!

Guest Post by Sarah

After recently wandering around the Camberwell Market on a cold Sunday morning in Melbourne and admiring some of the antique furniture, I was keen to 'up-cycle' an ordinary bookcase I had at home. So I took to youtube for some handy hints, and got stuck into the project.

From the local hardware store, I bought:
  • 1 sheet of 250 grit sandpaper
  • 1 sheet of 100 grit sandpaper
  • 1 paint brush
  • 1 litre tin of water-based semi-gloss paint (this was too much paint - I could have used half this amount!)
Here's what I did...
Sand the bookcase with the 250 grit sandpaper

Clean using a rag after sanding with warm water and a splash of Methylated Spirits.

Wait for it to dry, then paint. You don't have to be too fussy with the painting, so if you don't get full coverage with one coat, don't worry - it adds to the distressed look!

Leave for a few hours to dry, then use the 100 grit sandpaper to give it the distressed, antique look, concentrating on edges and decorative carvings in the wood.

I have to say that I am very happy with the finished product, and was very surprised at how easy it was. Just allow a few hours on a sunny day, and turn a daggy old piece of furniture you have at home into something special!

Happy crafting!

Nick's Pear Tart

Our good friend Nick came and stayed with us on the Sunshine Coast where he and David played a string of gigs together.  It's always a cook fest when Nick's around and this trip he impressed us all with his version of a Pear Tart.  Nick wanted me to mention the fact that this is actually a recipe that his friend Jean Pierre gave to him - Jean Pierre is a lovely Frenchman, and we are very grateful to him for sharing this yummy recipe.

Ingredients
  • 10 Beurre Bosc pears (the brown ones)
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 200g plain, sifted flour
  • 300 butter
  • 1 egg
Method
  • Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees celcius
  • Core and peel the pears and cut them in half
  • Melt 150g butter and combine the brown sugar on low heat
  • Stack the pears neatly in the pan on top of the butter (as shown below)
  • Simmer on gentle heat for 20 mins (or until the pears are slightly caramelised)
  • While that's simmering, to make the pastry, rub 150g butter into flour, add the egg, knead the pastry and then roll out to the size of the fry-pan
  • Once the pears are done, put the pastry on top of the pears and then put the whole thing in the oven for approx 35 mins (until the pastry starts turning golden brown).
Finally, turn it onto a plate (pastry side down) and serve with either ice-cream or cream (or even both!!).  Delicious!  Thanks Nick!!
