New Zealand Showcase: The World of Wearable Art

Are you an art-lover, fashion designer or humble admirer of beautiful things? We certainly are! Up next on our tour of New Zealand is the incredible annual World of Wearable Art Awards Show (WOW) held in Wellington, New Zealand. Taking place each year from late September to early October, this Awards Show spectacle now attracts over 300 designers and requires a cast and crew in excess of 400!

Originally conceived over 25 years ago by Nelson sculptor Suzy Moncrieff , WOW is now an annual sell-out event that attracts entries and audience members from all over the world. If you can believe it, this Awards Show actually began as part of a promotion for a rural art gallery! Since moving to Wellington in 2005, WOW has continued to grow and expand – it now attracts an audience of over 30,000 people per season.

Once described as “Mardi Gras meets Haute Couture at a Peter Gabriel concert directed by Salvador Dali,” WOW is definitely turning the conventional perceptions of art and fashion on its head. Each year the Awards Show features unique works designed specifically for the moving body; they are then given special light effects, atmospheric music and are individually choreographed into a completely original 2-hour theatrical show. Previous categories have included: Bizarre Bras, Illumination Illusions and Reflective Surfaces. These alone sound like good reason for Mark D’Arcy, 2010 International Judge and former Creative Officer of Time Warner, to remark “WOW makes Lady Gaga look like a librarian!”

We’ll leave you with one of WOW’s many excellent YouTube videos. Pop over and visit their entire channel, as it’s absolutely full of fascinating interviews and “behind-the-scene” looks at their productions – definitely something to check out!
